Yesterday evening, a gunman killed four people in a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper building before killing himself, officials say. The shooting occurred at 6:30 pm in the 345 Park Avenue building at East 52nd Street, owned by Rudin Management, which contains the headquarters for the National Football League and investment company Blackstone.
The two victims publicly identified are an NYPD officer, Didarul Islam, and Blackstone real estate executive, Wesley LePatner. A fifth victim was left critically injured in the shooting, while four others received minor injuries.
The 27-year-old man had a documented mental health history. Officials found a three-page suicide note in his pocket that described his anger around his mental illness—CTE, a common injury experienced among boxers or football players because of frequent head trauma. They believe this may be linked to his high-school football years. Investigators are looking at the NFL’s corporate offices as a possible motive for the attack.
